OVERVIEW
Engineers may not realise the many technical advantages of Cement-Treated Base (CTB) in Road and Airfield pavement construction. It is not surprising that many wrongly perceive that CTB is another version of concrete, is in accordance with BS1881 and is expensive.
On the contrary, CTB is a totally different material, having a different code of practice and is a very strong and versatile material component in the pavement system. The basic CTB material is more than ten times stronger than a standard granular base with a very small addition of cement and other added cost.
The distinct structural advantage of CTB is that it can prevent premature pavement problem if properly designed and installed. It should, therefore, be used whenever heavy-duty pavement is to be invested.
This paper highlights the uncertainties in pavement design and construction issues. It will show how CTB can help prevent the possibility of premature pavement failures and garner longer life pavements, with only a small addition in material cost.
