How can the NHS reduce inpatient isolation and bolster emotional wellbeing during the pandemic and beyond?

Coronavirus has, in many instances, served to isolate inpatients. Those with the virus have of course had to be treated with a particularly strict regard for infection prevention and control. But many of those hospitalised for other reasons have also been cut off – spending a vulnerable time either prevented from having any visitors, or having visitors severely restricted. It is a situation likely to persist for some time.

The result is potentially poorer patient experience and an impact on emotional wellbeing which could last into the longer term. It also means new challenges for clinical teams in effectively involving families and loved ones in the care of a patient.

So how can the NHS reduce the isolation of inpatients during this time of a pandemic? What might it need to do to bolster mental wellbeing? What role might technology be able to play in supporting connections between patients and loved ones, and indeed between patients and the outside world more generally?
