The curtain has gone up and the players are all in their places. The EU’s GDPR rules, California’s CCPA, the City of New York’s NYDFS Cybersecurity Regulation (23 NYCRR 500), and various other international, domestic and regional privacy and cybersecurity laws and regulations are in place. The penalties range from potentially shutting down the company to a mere slap on the wrist, but penalties aren’t all that companies need to worry about.
Aside from the serious hit a company can take on its reputation, violations of compliance regulations could have long-lasting impacts on a company’s ability to do business. New compliance laws are making corporate executives personally liable for losses. And, to make matters even more confusing, sometimes complying with regulations could put you in conflict with other regulations.
